IOLITE

General information

Iolite is the transparent variety of cordierite. It is a magnesium-aluminum silicate and belongs to the cyclosilicates family. Iolite can be gray, blue, violet, blue-purple, or yellowish brown in color. The stone is transparent to translucent with a greasy sheen.

Effect

Iolite is a spiritual stone and stimulates insight and knowledge. It helps you discover who you are and empowers you to be yourself. It promotes independence and responsibility, thereby reducing problems with dependency (on both substances and people) and addictions. Consequently, the stone also promotes healthy and equal relationships. Spiritually, it promotes visions and visualization and provides protection during out-of-body journeys and experiences. It helps balance the chakras. Physically, iolite reduces fever and kills bacteria and has a positive effect on the respiratory and sinus systems, malaria, migraines, and pituitary glands.

Etymology

Cordierite is named after the French geologist P.L.A. Cordier (1777-1861).

Iolite comes from the Greek word for violet.

Origin

Iolite is found in Sri Lanka, Burma, Namibia, Brazil, Tanzania and Madagascar.
